We Need You!

Sign up to be a team member or a coach.

Odyssey of the Mind is a child-centered and nationally held program that encourages team work and problem solving skills.  Students are given one big problem (and a lot of small ones) on which to work on throughout the school year.  They brainstorm, build things, paint, act, sing and dance, make new friends, and have a lot of serious fun!  In late winter/early spring they share their solution in front of a panel of judges at OotM Region 14 Competition.

In order to form teams to represent Blue Ridge, we are looking for some creative, dedicated, and extraordinary students in grades 6-8 to be a part of the Odyssey of the Mind team this year.  BUT…the number of teams that we can have will be limited by the number of coaches that volunteer their time. Therefore, we need additional coaches and then we will help fill teams, as needed. As such, the only way to guarantee that your child makes it onto a team is to volunteer to be a coach!**

While this is a fantastic opportunity for students, it involves a large time commitment from both parents and students.  All practices are held outside of the normal school day.  In preparation for the competition, students are expected to meet one or more times a week for practices that may last an hour or longer.  Additionally, there will be a cost of $40 for each student that participates in Odyssey of the Mind.  This money will go towards the cost of supplies and the tournament registration fees.

Teams must be formed by November 19th, which is before our Regional Coach’s Training on November 21st so that all coaches can attend this mandatory training. If you would like to learn more about Odyssey of the Mind or become a coach, please contact our Odyssey of the Mind Coordinator, Jennifer Tribino jenniferkaylee@hotmail.com

**All coaches are required to participate in a Coaches Training Session.  The Regional training is at Freedom High School on November 21st  for $30 (reimbursed). There are two additional coaches training sessions being held on Saturday, November 14, 2015 – one in Clifton, VA and one in Alexandria, VA.  Please let Jenn Tribino know which training session that you are able to attend so that you can be registered.
