A February Reflection

As we begin the second semester of our eighth year, we are truly reflecting on our academic program as well as the ways we promote citizenship, health, and safety. It is our commitment to provide every child the opportunity to achieve success as a student and to grow daily as a safe and healthy citizen of our community and the world.

To that end, our Belmont Station School Improvement Plan for 2011-2012 provides information on all aspects of school life.  We consider this plan an ever changing and improving commitment to educate and prepare our children to be shining stars today and brilliant leaders tomorrow.

The plan highlights the ways we can continue to offer one of the very best elementary academic programs in the nation and also highlights elements of character education.  Additionally, each of our grade level teams, and all of our specialists, are responsible for diversity awareness within the school and community.

The concepts of diversity and equity have certainly been priorities as we planned the activities for the month ahead. During February, which is also considered the heart ♥ of the academic year, our children will learn about many of our founding fathers and the many contributions of famous African Americans. In conjunction with Black History Month activities, we will have a special daily broadcast on the Belmont Station News Show highlighting a famous African American inventor and hero.

As a very special treat this year, some of our children will attend a reading by poet and award winning producer Kwame Alexander. He will share his book, Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band with children from all over the DC area on February 13tt at Dulles Airport. Belmont Station was honored to be one of the two schools from Loudoun to receive this invitation.  Mr. Alexander plans to discuss the great jazz performers who are parodied in his book.

While the month of February is short, and often cold, it certainly is long on learning about the planet, people, and places.  Please plan to join us for any of our many February activities.  Being in the school and around the children will surely warm your heart and renew your faith in the future of our world.

Sincerely,
Patty
